We Love Cindy Sherman

Anything and everything relating to Cindy Sherman and her artwork: interviews, quotes by and about Cindy, videos, candid shots, exhibition views, and--most importantly--Sherman's masterful photographs. I will do my best to provide a nice mix of both well-known works, and some of her more rare pieces.

Cindy Sherman in a mock-interview with MICA-TV in 1981. Here is a short clip.

I have not yet found the full version online, nor do I think I ever will since, after all, it is video art, and video art is heavily guarded by its copyright holders. However, from what I have read, Cindy Sherman’s outfits—and thus, her personalities—abruptly change throughout the ten-minute duration of the mock-interview.

These are no ordinary pinup pieces. Sherman obliviously means to play off against the centerfold conventions. Sweat drenches cheeks, damp bangs are plastered to foreheads, hands clutch bedcovers or newspaper clippings. Instead of projecting allure, the expressions Sherman’s personae assume are remote and ambiguous. Despite the initial message of come-hither availability, the pictures ultimately close the viewer off.
— New York Times art critic, Andy Grundberg, about the Centerfolds series. (1981)
